6 Things You Need to Know About Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure which has become much more popular over the last decade.  The labia are the folds of skin surrounding your vulva.  The size of these folds will vary from woman to woman and some women feel that theirs are too large.  The primary way to address this is by surgically reducing the size of the labia.  As this procedure becomes more common, more women are trying to find out the facts about what is involved with this procedure and decide whether or not it is something they should consider.  To get you started off in the right direction, there are six fundamental truths you need to know about labiaplasty.

  1. Labiaplasty Is Different than Vaginoplasty

When you begin investigating labiaplasty, it is important that you do not confuse it with vaginoplasty or vaginal rejuvination.  Labiaplasty is a procedure which focuses solely on the labia – specifically the labia minora (inner lips) and/or labia majora (larger, outer lips).  The primary reason women prefer this procedure is because the inner labia protruded from the outer labia. A vaginoplasty is a procedure performed on the vagina.  Most often this procedure targets the entrance to the vagina (introitus) or the muscle lining to tighten the vagina.  This procedure is most commonly done after pregnancy.

  1. The Most Common Reasons to Consider Labiaplasty

Your labia size is primarily determined by genetics, although it can be affected by aging, childbirth, and certain hormones.  The most common reasons for this procedure include:

  • Reduce abrasion caused by undergarments and tight jeans which can lead to inflammation and infection
  • Long labia can cause physical discomfort or embarrassment during sex and throughout your daily routine.
  • Increase comfort during certain types of physical activity such as biking or exercising
  1. Labiaplasty Does Not Always Affect Sexual Stimulation

If you are considering labiaplasty primarily to increase your sexual stimulation, then you may be disappointed.  While it can provide this benefit, there is no guarantee that it will.  The primary reason labiaplasty can improve sexual stimulation is because the labia are interfering with penetration or clitoral stimulation.  The primary purpose of this procedure is to reduce discomfort and improve your self-confidence.

  1. Large Labia is Not the Result of “Too Much Intercourse”

A common misperception is that labiaplasty is “pornographic” or to reverse the damage caused by having too much sex.  The truth is actually the exact opposite.  Most women who have overly large labia folds often have much less sex than the average woman.  This is because sex can be incredibly painful, especially if the labia have become inflamed by exercise or certain types of clothing.

  1. A Labiaplasty is Not about Genital Mutilation or Vanity

Some women will never look into a labiaplasty because they fear it is really just a form of genital mutilation or a procedure created to satisfy their vanity.  The easiest way to put the labiaplasty procedure in perspective is to compare it to male circumcision.  The only difference is that circumcision is done soon after birth.  Both procedures are designed to provide a better quality of life by reducing the potential for inflammation, infection, and pain.

Labiaplasty is a legitimate procedure which can provide amazing benefits to women with labia folds which are too large.  It can significantly increase the overall level of comfort, improve self-esteem, eliminate embarrassment, and significantly increase the quality of life of many women.
