What are Silicone Implants?

For women 22 and older, silicone implants are approved by the FDA to be used in cosmetic procedures. The implants consist of a soft silicone shell filled with a semi-soft gel that feels like real breast tissue.

What is the Difference Between Saline and Silicone Implants?

Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel with the consistency and feel of natural fat within the breasts. The amount of filler is determined in your consultation. Many women prefer the look of silicone implants as they look fuller and feel more like natural breasts. You will be able to decide on the amount of filler during your consultation with Dr. Schusterman.

Saline implants feature a silicone shell and are filled with saline (saltwater) instead of silicone gel. The incision is smaller in this procedure because the implants are not filled until they are placed inside the breasts. For specific information about our saline implants, visit our saline Implant page.

Procedure

Most patients are under general anesthesia during surgery. During the breast augmentation, there will be a single incision in three locations: under the breasts, under the arms, and around the nipples.

After the cuts are made, Dr. Schusterman will separate the breast and connective tissues from the chest to create a pocket for the implants. The implant will be placed in the pocket and centered behind the nipple. Silicone implants are inserted pre-filled with the determined amount of filler before in place. Once the implants are in place, Dr. Schusterman will close the incisions and wrap the breasts to keep down inflammation and swelling.

Recovery

To help you heal as quickly as possible, there is a specific post-op regiment to follow. The expected downtime is 6-8 weeks, and you will have tubes inserted to help with fluid draining. The tubes are typically removed in about a week, but it depends on how extensive the procedure is.

You will need to avoid any heavy lifting and physical activity for at least two weeks. Your breasts will be very sensitive, so you will want to make sure you are careful about other people running into you or any jarring movements during daily activities. If your job is not physically active, you may be able to return to work sooner.

Results

You will be excited about the results once you have healed from your Houston silicone breast implant procedure and the swelling and bruising have dissipated. Changes in your breasts will be seen immediately, such as a change in breast symmetry, tone, and shape. For specific information about our breast implant results, visit our Breast Augmentation page.

FAQs

Silicone Implants have been approved by the FDA for over fifty years. They were pulled from the U.S. market in the early 2000s for safety concerns. However, new technology and further research have proven silicone implants are safe to use. Silicone implants can be used on women 22 years of age for cosmetic procedures for women of any age for reconstructive purposes.

Silicone implants are considered safe for breast augmentation and breast reconstruction by the FDA. If silicone implants rupture, the leak may go undetected because the silicone remains within the fibrous breast tissue around the implant. This is known as a silent rupture. While a rupture in your breast implant isn't known to cause health problems, a rupture will change the shape of your implant, and future surgery will be needed to correct it.

Be sure to check with your insurance provider about coverage options. Breast augmentation is considered elective surgery and is not covered under medical insurance. The Texas Center for Breast & Body can work with you and your financial situation to offer reasonable payment options.

Double-board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Schusterman will guide you through this process to determine if silicone implants are right for you. It is rare to have major complications from silicone breast implants, but cosmetic surgical procedures may carry certain risks and complications, and they can include: swelling, numbness, bleeding at the incision sites, persistent pain, blood clotting, fluid accumulation, infection, and nerve damage.
