Can You Go Tanning After Botox?

If you are considering getting Botox injections, congratulations! It is one of our most popular choices for people seeking quick and stress-free solutions.

However, there are a few essential things you need to remember related to skin care. Following your Houston Botox treatments, you must be more mindful of your body, especially your facial skin.

What about sun exposure, and tanning during that upcoming beach party you’ve planned? To help your skin look and feel its best, read the following article before seeing your doctor for a consultation and Botox treatments.

What Are Botox injections?

Botox injections are the common term for when your facial muscles receive a shot of Botox. A purified form of botulinum toxin A, these injections help to reduce wrinkles. After an injection, the result is a smoother appearance and fewer imperfections in your facial skin. Mostly, they eliminate the wrinkles and long lines in the skin that develop when your face moves (for example, when frowning or laughing).

Botox is an excellent solution for people who do not want treatments as invasive as face lifts, but who still need cosmetic procedures that are more effective than facial creams or oils. When getting a Botox injection, you may find that it even eliminates the need for other invasive surgeries.

Botox injections can also help to erase other imperfections such as acne scars or unwanted aging lines in the forehead or nose bridge. It is a straightforward, non-invasive procedure, and it is also one of our most popular cosmetic treatments.

Most of our patients are between 30 to 60 years old. While the results vary, they are mostly excellent, and our customers are always satisfied. One injection treatment can last for up to four months. It is a quick, easy and straightforward way to get the youthful features you once had.

Tanning and Skin Care After Botox

However, one of the most common questions we get asked is, “Can I tan after Botox?” Many of our patients are active and love traveling, which means exposure to the sun happens regularly.

We would caution you to limit tanning immediately after Botox. The reason for this is that some people do experience injection-related side effects. These include (but are not limited to) some bruising and swelling of the skin. Others may experience light itching and tenderness or redness in the area that received the injection. These side effects depend on the nature of the person’s skin, how many doses they have had, and how aggressive their treatment is.

This does not mean you need to stay out of the sun altogether. Merely focus on skin protection more than ever before. Never let your skin be exposed to harsh rays without an SPF 30 sunscreen, and use protective wear such as hats or sunglasses if you plan to tan. Limit your sun exposure after a Botox treatment to give your skin adequate time to rebalance.

One way you can help the effectiveness of the injections is to take care when moving your facial muscles in the 12 hours following a procedure. Avoid strenuous exercise. Instead, try a light walk or use a stationary bike, and avoid more strenuous workouts that require you to bend over or jump around. Remember to limit yoga, Pilates, and weight-training exercises during the first couple of days.

For the best results, you want to avoid tanning beds and direct sunlight within the first 48 hours. After two weeks, you may resume your regular outdoor activities, but make sure you follow your doctor’s specific recommendations for facial care.

Natural oils and creams that will have no adverse effect on your facial skin include 100 percent aloe vera gel and coconut oil. Your doctor or skin rejuvenation clinic in Houston can give you other personalized recommendations for skin-safe creams following your injections.

Other Things to Avoid

When you are seeking a more youthful appearance, the best thing you can do for your body is to treat it with care. Get enough hours of sleep during the night, or if time permits, allow yourself catnaps during the day. Cut out or limit your smoking and alcohol consumption. If you must drink, think about the effects on your skin. Choose soothing red wine over cocktails and other hard alcohol.

Refrain from using any harsh exfoliants during your bathing and skin routines. Speed up your recovery process by also limiting the amount of makeup you use immediately after your Botox injections.
