Discover the Truth Behind the 5 Most Popular Liposuction Myths

Liposuction is to be a surgery which was only reserved for the rich and famous.  Today, it is becoming increasingly common to see it used in all areas of society.  This is primarily because there’s been a significant cost reduction over the past decade as well as increasingly safe techniques.  As with all trends, as it became more popular the number of myths and misconceptions around it grew.

Myth – Liposuction Is Only for Women

Liposuction is a surgery which many people consider to be only for women.  The truth is that liposuction is the third most popular cosmetic surgery performed on men.  Every year, more than 35,000 men take advantage of this cosmetic procedure.

Myth – Liposuction Is All about Losing Weight

This couldn’t be farther from the truth.  Liposuction is not an effective weight loss strategy.  Most procedures only removed several pounds of fat.  This is because the more fat being removed during a surgery, the higher the risk of serious complications become.  The same is true for undergoing multiple liposuction surgeries on the same area of the body.  Instead of focusing on losing weight, liposuction is designed to focus on altering the target areas size and sculpting.  While you may actually only lose a few pounds, and effective liposuction procedure can make you look like you’ve lost a lot more.

Myth – Fat Will Not Return After Liposuction Surgery

While liposuction can remove a significant amount of fat, it is definitely not a permanent weight loss solution.  Anyone can gain back additional weight if they consume more calories in a day then they burn.  In most cases, liposuction is used to treat specific problem areas which exercise and diet have not been able to address.  At the same time, fat cells do not multiply the same way normal cells.  Instead, they shrink and expand.  One of the benefits of liposuction is it reduces the total number of fat cells in the target area which can minimize the appearance of weight gain after the surgery.

Myth – Every Liposuction Procedure is the Same

Depending upon the target location of the procedure, there is a variety of potential differences from one procedure to the next.  In some cases, no general anesthesia will be needed.  It is primarily determined by how much fat is being removed.  Additionally, some people have a higher pain tolerance than others and a local anesthetic is all which will be required.  On the other hand, some people will need to stay overnight in the hospital, while others will be back to work in a few days.

Myth – Liposuction is Expensive

Liposuction procedures are getting less expensive all of the time.  This is because new techniques are being introduced every year to cut down costs and minimize risks.  While it used to be a very expensive procedure, this is no longer the case.  Considering the results, many plastic surgeons often consider liposuction to be one of the best values on the market.

The only way to ensure you make the right choice about liposuction is by consulting with a board certified plastic surgeon.  With so many variables affecting each procedure, it is impossible to know exactly what to expect without talking to a professional first.
