Is Dermaplaning Your Best Option for Facial Rejuvenation?

When it comes to facial rejuvenation, you have a lot of options to choose from.  Dermaplaning has consistently been a popular option for treating a variety of issues related to creating healthier skin and a younger look.  The big question most people have is whether or not dermaplaning the best fit for their specific situation.  In order to decide what option is right for you, it is important to understand what dermaplaning is and how it stacks up to the competition.

Dermaplaning – The Basics

The purpose of dermaplaning is to remove the top layer of your facial skin which will get rid of dead skin cells as well as many surface imperfections.  This process normally takes as little as 15 minutes, depending upon the size of the treatment area.  By using a sterile surgical blade, often referred to as a dermatome, the facial skin is carefully removed using a motion similar to shaving.

What Does Dermaplaning Treat?

Over the years, dermaplaning has been recommended to treat a variety of skin related issues.  This includes treating skin which is dry or rough, minimizing acne scars, improving uneven skin tone, reducing fine lines, and shrinking large pores.  In some cases, it can also help eliminate unwanted facial hair.  It is considered a safe, noninvasive treatment which provides overall skin rejuvenation.

Dermaplaning vs. The Alternatives

For most situations, the primary alternative to dermaplaning is microdermabrasion.  Like dermaplaning, microdermabrasion has long been known to be a quality nonsurgical treatment for facial rejuvenation.  While they both aim to achieve similar goals, they go about it in much different ways.  Instead of using a surgical blade, microdermabrasion focuses on exfoliating the surface of your skin with pressurized abrasive crystals.

Dermaplaning is considered to be a more aggressive form of exfoliation because the use of a surgical blade necessarily creates a risk of accidental nicks and cuts.  This makes it incredibly important that you choose a practitioner who consistently provides excellent results.  While it is a more aggressive treatment, dermaplaning is considered to be more effective against prominent acne scars and wrinkles.

Microdermabrasion is considered to be more easily customized to specific treatment results.  This is primarily because it can be used to essentially polish the skin or go considerably deeper for a more complete exfoliation.  Additionally, there is less risk with microdermabrasion because there is a substantially smaller chance that the skin can be broken.

Is Dermaplaning Going to Give You the Results You Want?

Dermaplaning is ideal for patients who want a full skin rejuvenation treatment which is nonsurgical and noninvasive.  One of the biggest benefits is that you can treat acne scars and deep wrinkles while still getting fast treatment sessions and no downtime.  In most cases, microdermabrasion will be a better option if you only want your face to have a more polished look.  If there are specific flaws which need to be addressed, such as acne scars or wrinkles, then dermaplaning will likely give you the best results.
