More Men Are Turning to Plastic Surgery than Ever Before

There have recently been a number of reports discussing the increasing number of men who are turning to minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, such as Botox, microdermabrasion, and injectable fillers, in order to improve their appearance.  While this is definitely true, there has also been a surge in men turning to plastic surgery as well.  While they still make up less than 10 percent of the total number of cosmetic procedures, the number of men utilizing plastic surgery has increased 121 percent over the past 15 years.

The General Attitudes about Plastic Surgery Are Changing

One of the primary reasons more men are turning to plastic surgery is because the general attitudes about plastic surgery has steadily improved.  More than 51 percent of all Americans say that they would consider cosmetic plastic surgery an option and 67 percent say that they don’t mind if their friends and family knew they had a cosmetic surgery done.  When you combine the increasing acceptance of cosmetic plastic surgery with the increasing awareness of men that they need to take better care of their physical appearance it shouldn’t be a surprise plastic surgery is now a viable option for them.

Aging Has Played a Significant Role

A majority of the men who are taking advantage of cosmetic plastic surgery are either baby boomers for their children.  In total (both genders), it is estimated that 35 to 64-year-olds are responsible for more than 70 percent of all cosmetic procedures.  Men are leaning towards cosmetic plastic surgery which requires minimal downtime such as Houston liposuction, eyelid surgery, facelifts, and even breast reductions (gynecomastia surgery).  Along with minimizing downtime, men tend to prefer surgeries which provide maximum results in relation to their goals.  For example, an eyelid surgery in Houston and liposuction procedure targeting the stomach can instantly make men look significantly younger.  Not only can it make them look younger, but these are areas which are difficult to correct without surgery.

The Face of Business Is Changing

Another reason men are more readily turning to cosmetic plastic surgery is because the face of business is changing.  A decade ago, most people thought about high-powered professional men as being older and more established.  While this is still a fairly accurate depiction of the corporate landscape, younger CEOs, especially in the technology sector, are becoming more common and increasingly popular.  Looking younger is now associated with a variety of coveted qualities such as a sense of ingenuity and increased energy.

There Are No Signs of This Trend Reversing

While trends are always changing in the health and beauty industry, there is no reason to think the number of men considering cosmetic plastic surgery will backpedal.  If anything, the growing emphasis on men to maintain their bodies and look their best as they age will increase the number of men utilizing cosmetic plastic surgery.  While men are still nowhere near women in terms of the volume of plastic surgery completed over the course of the year, they are slowly starting to catch up.
