Who Should Consider Liposuction?

If you have some unwanted fat on your body, you could benefit from having body sculpting surgery though it isn’t for everyone. Before considering liposuction, it’s important to determine if you’re a good candidate. Houston cosmetic surgeon Dr. Schusterman can help you determine whether or not the procedure is right for you, but it can be helpful to make your own assessments first.

Weight

This surgery is not meant to help you lose weight. If you have tried diet and exercise and they haven’t worked for you, there are many other options available. However, if you are within 20 pounds of a normal weight for your age and height, you may benefit from the procedure. Many times, you can be what is considered a healthy weight and still have trouble areas, such as a stomach pooch or flabby arms. This procedure works best for these situations.

Age

While the technique has been approved for people 16 years or older, it is recommended for women to wait until they are finished having children before considering the surgery. Because it is not permanent, stretching the body during pregnancy and childbirth could cause the fat to redeposit in the wrong areas, causing you to require the surgery again.

It is also mentioned that those who are older may not get the best results, as skin elasticity is an important factor, also.

Initial Consultation

During your first consultation with the plastic surgeon, you’ll find out if liposuction is truly right for you or if some other procedure may be better. During this time, you will receive an examination to ensure that you are healthy and can discuss what you expect from the surgery. If you are an appropriate candidate, you can move forward with the process.

Disease or Allergies

One more thing that could change your mind about the procedure is whether or not you have a problem or allergies. If you are allergic to anesthesia or medication, you will likely be turned down for the procedure. Likewise, if you have any disease that is active, you’ll be asked to wait until it goes away. Because it is still considered surgery, there could be greater risks if you have any disease or allergy. You may also be discouraged from the procedure if you drink excessive amounts of alcohol or smoke tobacco products, as these could cause severe complications with the surgery.
