What is a Photofacial?

Photofacials are designed to correct facial flaws with two popular light procedures: IPL (Intense Pulsed Light ) or LED (Light Emitting Diode). Treatments are designed to penetrate deep layers of the skin, stimulate blood flow, and correct irregular pigmentation on the skin's surface.

Photofacial Procedure

During your treatment, Dr. Schusterman will cleanse your face and apply a cool gel. You will also be given dark glasses to protect your eyes from the light. A light wand will then pulse light along the targeted areas.

As the light moves along the area, light pulses are absorbed into the skin. The Photofacial light soaks up the red blood cells (hemoglobin) and pigmentation (melanin) in the skin. As the melanin breaks up, it is absorbed, leaving the surface of the skin clear of any discoloration from the unsightly age or brown spots. Your treatment will last between 15-45 minutes and will have minimal discomfort.

Photofacial Recovery

After your first photofacial treatment, your skin will appear smoother and have an even tone. You are able to resume activities immediately, but it may take up to a week to diminish any redness or flaking of the skin. It is common to experience some redness, crusting, and bruising, but these skin effects will fade within the week.

Photofacial Results

As your photofacial treatment heals, you will see gradual improvements. Dr. Schusterman will set up your continued treatments over the next four to six weeks to provide you with the dramatic results you are expecting.

After your four to six treatments, your IPL photofacial results will be apparent for up to six months to a year. It is recommended that you adhere to a good skincare regimen and use sunblock daily.
